Access to finance is still the largest barrier facing South Africa’s small businesses, even as funding options multiply. The SA MSME Access to Finance Report 2025, by Finfind and African Bank, puts the gap at R350 billion and attributes most of it to a mismatch between what lenders offer and what businesses need. The IFC’s MSME Finance Gap work suggests only around one formal MSME in twenty has access to credit. The demand is not in question. Who meets it is.
The supply side has answered. In 2018 the same report counted 148 active funders and 328 products; in 2025 it counts 315 and 605. The number of funders has more than doubled, and the entrants are banks, non-banks and fintechs alike. A small business owner looking for capital today is not choosing whether to borrow; they are choosing between more than three hundred places to do it, and most of those places say the same three things: fast, flexible, unsecured.

The buyer is small and time-poor. Eighty-five percent of funding applications come from businesses turning over under R1 million a year; 38.7 percent are looking for less than R250,000. These are owner-operators in retail, food and beverage, medical practice, distribution, hospitality and service businesses, deciding between the lunch rush and the school run, on a phone. Speed and certainty decide it as much as price does. The 2026 Budget has just moved the compulsory VAT registration threshold from R1 million to R2.3 million, easing cash flow and admin for exactly this segment; a policy signal that these are the businesses the country wants to grow.
Expressed intent has thinned while supply has thickened. Our own read of Google search demand in South Africa shows non-brand business-funding searches down 23 percent year on year, roughly 19,200 a month, with a predictable trough every December. Twice the funders, fewer raised hands. That changes what marketing is for in this category. It is not a contest to be cheapest at the moment of search; it is a contest to be the funder a business already knows and trusts before it searches, and to convert the ones who do arrive without leaking them between the click and the call.
